Is Lumpwood charcoal the same as mined coal?

Skills & Learnings

Is Lumpwood charcoal the same as mined coal?

We are asked this many times and it’s not such a silly question. It’s not the same.

Lumpwood charcoal is made from the controlled burning of wood in a specialist oven called a charcoal retort. In a retort, our makers control the burn of British woodland hardwood very carefully, reducing the oxygen to combust away moisture, oils, vinegars and a host of other elements, leaving high quality charcoal consisting of around 90% carbon.

Coal from a mine is a non-renewable energy source and formed from dead matter over hundreds of millions of years by geological forces of heat and pressure. The two are not to be confused. Please don’t use mined coal to cook on!
