OK, OK.  When we talk about rare charcoals that are made from trees grown in Britain, this must be the rarest.  Again a first for House of Charcoal, we are delighted to offer this single species charcoal made from British grown Holm Oak trees.  Holm Oak is one of the most popular charcoals in the US because it is unrivalled for low and slow cooking and we are so lucky to be able to offer it.

The evergreen Holm Oak used to make the charcoal, is more commonly found in Mediterranean countries and is not a UK native species.  This batch comes from Norfolk and was introduced by the First Earl of Holkham in around 1770.  The Holm Oak charcoal we are used to in the UK tends to come from Spain and Portugal where it unusually thrives in coastal settings as it flourishes in sand, sea air and salt.

British grown Holm Oak is more than twice as hard as English Oak and 1/3 more dense. The charcoal it makes is unique and outstanding and takes a lot longer to get going than our other charcoals - circa 20 minutes.   When it does though, it just goes on and on - for up to 4 hours in an open grill or to the end of time as we know it in a Kamado.

You will not be able to buy a more dense charcoal that has been made from trees grown in Britain.  This is the longest burning charcoal of its type and perfect for those low and slow fans.  We only have a limited stock as there are only a certain number of trees that were thinned as part of the woodland coppicing by the Norfolk charcoal team.

So this really is a grab it while you can, savour its light smoke, raw and even heat and the long long long burn time!
  • Grown in Britain - always
  • The best long burning, british grown and made charcoal we have come across
  • High density, takes a while to catch but easy to control
  • Remarkably light smoke profile for an Oak, but neutral and still allows the food to ship through
  • Add smoking chunks for added smokiness - ideal with Oak chunks
  • Can be re-used after shut down but its density means it does not want to go out easily
  • No chemicals, ever
  • Made from coppiced Holm Oak trees from Norfolk
  • Suitable for all grills and cooking methods
  • Sustainably produced in the UK by gifted charcoal makers

*The purchase of each bag of British charcoal secures our forests, woodlands and the beasts that live within for future generations.  We do this together, one bag at a time.Unnecessary charcoal imports are damaging tropical ecosystems and polluting the planet, not to mention the humanitarian impacts in some territories.  We need to burn British!

  • Great with pork

  • Great with lamb

  • Great with beef

Flavour Profile

Less of a smoke profile than English Oak, so mild in its infusion. Renowned more for its burn length than flavour profile so add English Oak chunks for added depth of flavour
