We’re proud to be partnering with Pipers&Co. And, as with many good things at House of Charcoal, it started with a conversation beside a fire.
On the first day at Ludlow, James met Peter as he was lighting charcoal in the fire pit. Security were a little less enthusiastic about proceedings and said something about needing a three-mile cordon, but Peter was happy to chat.
The fire caught James’ attention. The conversation gave him a reason to stay.
It quickly became clear that we shared a belief: good food begins with knowing where your ingredients come from, understanding how they’re produced and caring about the people behind them. Naturally, we had a few things to say about the ingredient beneath the ingredients, too.

Meet Pipers&Co
Based in Devon, Pipers&Co is a family business with roots in Pipers Farm, founded by Peter and Henri Greig more than 35 years ago. Today, their son Will is building on that heritage, bringing together small-scale farmers, growers and artisan food makers who share a care for their craft and the land.
From carefully reared meat to seasonal produce and pantry favourites, their aim is to make good food part of everyday life, with a closer connection to the people and places behind it.
There was plenty for us to agree on.
Good ingredients, all the way to the fire
When you’ve taken care to choose your meat, it makes sense to give the charcoal beneath it the same consideration.
Pipers&Co bring that care to the food. At House of Charcoal, we champion British makers whose knowledge of their woodlands and craft shapes every bag they produce.
For both of us, knowing the story matters. It helps you understand what you’re cooking with, appreciate the work behind it and get more pleasure from bringing it to the table.
That shared approach made a collaboration feel like a very natural next step. Bonfire Night gave us a lovely reason to get started.
One box. A few different fires.
For our first campaign together, we’ve sent a selection of creators and ambassadors the ingredients for a Bonfire Night cook, with an invitation to make it their own.
Each gifted box brings together British beef from Pipers&Co, mixed British hardwood charcoal from Blackdown Charcoal and Whittle & Flame Oak smoking chunks, alongside recipe inspiration from Abby Allen’s The Farm Kitchen.

Meet the charcoal beneath the cook
We chose Blackdown for its versatile cooking performance and the care Ali and Kelly Gregory put into every batch.
Based in Devon’s Blackdown Hills, this family business makes small batches of Grown in Britain certified charcoal from locally sourced British hardwoods. Their woodland shapes what they produce, with careful management and coppicing at the heart of their approach.
Their mixed charcoal is quick to light, with even heat and a sustained burn. Its subtle smoke profile lets the food shine, giving our cooks a dependable foundation for their recipes.
