The National Coppice Federation
Long before chainsaws and modern forestry, Britain's woodlands were managed through a practice known as coppicing. Trees are carefully cut back to their base, allowing them to naturally regenerate and produce fresh growth every few years. Remarkably, a single coppiced tree can continue this cycle for decades, sometimes even centuries.
The National Coppice Federation exists to protect and promote this traditional woodland craft. Through education, training and advocacy, it helps keep coppicing alive while supporting the woodland workers and charcoal makers who rely upon it.
For British charcoal, coppicing is invaluable. It provides a continuous supply of sustainable hardwood, improves woodland biodiversity, allows light in the forest floor to enable it to regenerate - this act also creates a haven for shrubs, animals and insects to prosper thus transforming the whole forest.
Coppicing used to happen naturally through wind blown trees but man's intervention has interfered with that, hence why our forests now need our helping hand to recreate the trees falling down and allowing light into the floor. Put simply, many of Britain's finest artisan charcoal makers are driven by the sustainable approach coppiced allows them to work under and an additional purpose to drive on.
The more we manage our woodlands through coppicing, the less reliant we will be on imported timber. The UK is the second highest importer of timber in the world behind China, and this needs to change!

While the National Coppice Federation champions traditional woodland management, Grown in Britain (GiB) champions the use of British timber itself.
Grown in Britain encourages landowners, businesses and consumers to choose home-grown timber and woodland products, helping to strengthen Britain's forestry industry while ensuring woodlands remain actively managed rather than neglected.
Many of the charcoal makers we work with source their timber from woodlands managed according to the same principles promoted by GiB. That means responsibly harvested British hardwood, shorter supply chains, support for rural economies and healthier, more resilient forests. Hence you will find GiB across the products on our website or stamped on the bags of charcoal we sell.
